چکیده

A review of organic growers' concerns about weeds is presented and several issues that may ease those concerns are highlighted. The underlying principles of organic weed management (OWM) are briefly discussed and results from organic grower surveys regarding weed management practices in organic horticultural cropping are presented. The most common weeds encountered by organic growers, often those with persistent root systems, are also discussed. A list of suggestions for further OWM research are provided based on the organic literature and growers' comments.

Weed–crop competition relationships differ between organic and conventional cropping systems

Experiments comparing conventional and organic systems often report similar yields despite substantially higher weed abundance in the organic systems. A potential explanation for this observation is that weed– crop competition relationships differ between the two types of systems. We analysed weed and crop yield data from the Rodale Institute Farming Systems Trial (FST), which provides a unique...

Introduction [to Automation: The Future of Weed Controlin Cropping Systems]: Scope of the Problemâ•flRising Costs and Demand for Environmental Safety for Weed Control

Many organic and conventional producers rank weed control as their number one production cost. For organic producers particularly, weed control has become increasingly important as organic production has increased its market share. In conventional systems, herbicide resistance, off-target movement, and increased regulations have left many growers with few alternatives. Added to this is an incre...

Impacts of Organic Zero Tillage Systems on Crops, Weeds, and Soil Quality

Organic farming has been identified as promoting soil quality even though tillage is used for weed suppression. Adopting zero tillage and other conservation tillage practices can enhance soil quality in cropping systems where synthetic agri-chemicals are relied on for crop nutrition and weed control. Attempts have been made to eliminate tillage completely when growing several field crops organi...
